Chapter 20

Liam

How had I never realized what a depressing time of year Christmas could be? The past few years, the holidays hadn’t brought the same level of excitement as when I was a little kid, waiting anxiously for Santa to come, but I still enjoyed waking up to presents, and Mom always went all out on dinner. Some of the other Vitares thought it strange how our family had embraced the religious holiday, but Mom said it was the best way to continue blending in.

It was the little things I missed. The Christmas movies she’d force my sister, Beth, and me to watch, the music she’d play while cooking, and the ungodly amount of decorations that would adorn our house, inside and out.

Only one of the trailers in the park—Rose’s—had lights, though there were a couple that had trees in the window. Our trailer—I still couldn’t bring myself to call it home—had nothing.

Willow called the plastic tree on the counter a Christmas tree, but at barely two feet high when the long spindly branch poking out the top was straightened and not a single ornament hanging on it, it looked even more pathetic than Charlie Brown’s.

I looked over to where she sat in the rocking chair. She was perfectly content to sit there reading for hours. In the week since I’d moved in, she’d read almost twenty books.

I didn’t say anything, just stared, and eventually, she glanced up, as I knew she would, with an annoyed expression.

“What?” she asked.

“We should go out.”

“Where?”

“Downtown.”

“Why?”

“It’s almost Christmas. I haven’t bought anything yet.”

Which wasn’t uncommon for me. I liked to cram all my shopping in to the last two days before Christmas. That way I had less time to stress about finding the right gift. Everything was perfect when you had twenty minutes until the stores closed.

“Who would you buy for? I doubt your folks are going to let you in with open arms.”

My eye twitched as her barb sank deep.

“Well, I’ll make sure to scratch you off my list,” I said.

Which left only Krista on my rapidly shrinking list.

“You were going to buy me something?”

It was on the tip of my tongue to say no and save myself the embarrassment as she obviously had no plans to buy me anything, but the surprise in her voice made me wonder if she’d ever received a Christmas present before. I was tempted to ask, but I’d learned quickly that asking questions about her parents was asking for a verbal cut down.

“Maybe,” I admitted. Willow’s eyes widened just a fraction, and a small surge of happiness wound its way through me. “Besides, we haven’t left the trailer park since school let out.”

It had only been two days since winter break started and I was already going stir crazy. I’d even gone over to Rose’s to borrow her shovel and spent the morning clearing her walkway and a path all the way to our trailer.

“If we stay in here much longer, I may be tempted to invite Rose over.
